Every oil, butter, clay, and botanical we use: what it is, what it does for your skin, and why it earns a place in the bar.

A

Activated Charcoal

charcoal

Carbon processed to be ultra-porous, used to bind oil and impurities and add a dramatic black color. A staple of detox and clarifying bars for oily or congested skin.

Aloe Vera

Aloe barbadensis

A cooling, hydrating succulent gel that soothes and calms the skin. Pairs beautifully with mineral-rich botanicals in a balancing daily bar.

B

Bentonite Clay

A highly absorbent clay that draws out oil and impurities, giving a satisfying 'slip.' Popular in bars aimed at oily and acne-prone skin.

C

Castile

A soap made entirely (or almost entirely) from olive oil. Famously mild and low-lather, it's a classic choice for babies and reactive skin. Named for the Castile region of Spain.

Cocoa Butter

Theobroma cacao
cacao butter

A hard, fragrant butter pressed from cacao beans. It firms up the bar and leaves a protective, moisturizing film on the skin. Naturally smells faintly of chocolate unless deodorized.

Coconut Oil

Cocos nucifera

Delivers big, fluffy lather and a hard, cleansing bar. Used in excess it can be drying, so it's balanced with conditioning oils and a generous superfat.

Cold Process

A soap-making method where oils and lye are combined and left to saponify without external heat. It preserves the natural glycerin and gives full control over every ingredient. Cold-process bars then cure for 4–6 weeks to harden and mellow.

Colloidal Oatmeal

Avena sativa

Finely milled oats that soothe itch and calm irritation while adding gentle exfoliation. Recognized for comforting eczema-prone and reactive skin.

Curing

The 4–6 week resting period after a cold-process bar is cut. Water evaporates (making a harder, longer-lasting bar), the pH mellows toward skin-friendly levels, and the lather becomes creamier. Patience is an ingredient you can't see on the label.

E

Essential Oil

EO

An aromatic oil distilled or pressed directly from a plant. Natural and complex — but 'natural' still means it must be dosed correctly, since some essential oils are potent skin sensitizers at high levels.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus globulus

A bright, camphorous essential oil with a cooling, decongesting effect — the signature scent of shower steamers and invigorating morning bars.

F

Fragrance Oil

FO

A blended aroma compound (natural and/or synthetic) formulated for scent. A well-made fragrance oil can be fully skin-safe and IFRA-compliant — the right question isn't 'natural or not,' it's 'is it within safe limits for this product.'

G

Glycerin

A natural humectant — it draws moisture from the air into your skin — produced during saponification. Handmade soap keeps its glycerin; many commercial bars strip it out to sell separately. It's a big reason real soap feels less drying.

H

Honey

A natural humectant and antioxidant that boosts lather and draws moisture to the skin. Soothing and gently antibacterial — lovely in milk-and-oat bars for sensitive skin.

Humectant

An ingredient that attracts and holds water against the skin, helping it stay hydrated. Glycerin, honey, and aloe are humectants we lean on.

IFRA

The International Fragrance Association, which sets global safety standards and maximum usage levels for fragrance ingredients based on how a product is used. Every one of our scent blends is dosed within IFRA limits. See our Fragrance Safety guide.

K

Kaolin Clay

China clay

A mild white cosmetic clay that gently absorbs excess oil and adds silky 'slip' to the lather (great for shaving bars). The most gentle clay — suitable for sensitive and dry skin.

Kojic Acid

A naturally derived brightening active (from fermented rice/fungi) that helps fade dark spots and even skin tone over time. Best paired with daily SPF, since brightening skin is more sun-sensitive.

L

Lavender

Lavandula
lavender essential oil

A calming floral essential oil prized for its soothing, relaxing aroma. A go-to for bedtime bath products and sensitive-skin blends.

Lye

sodium hydroxide
caustic soda
NaOH

The strong alkali that drives saponification — sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for solid bars, potassium hydroxide (KOH) for liquid soap. It's fully consumed in the reaction, so a properly made, cured bar contains no lye. Without it, there is no real soap.

M

Magnesium

An essential mineral applied topically (as a spray or soak) to support muscle relaxation and recovery. The active behind our therapeutic magnesium spray.

O

Olive Oil

Olea europaea
Castile oil

A gentle, conditioning oil that makes a mild, low-bubble bar prized for sensitive skin. A 100% olive-oil soap is known as Castile. Rich in oleic acid; very skin-loving.

P

Papaya Enzyme

Carica papaya

Papain, a fruit enzyme from papaya that provides gentle enzymatic exfoliation — dissolving dull surface cells to reveal brighter skin without harsh scrubbing.

pH

A measure of acidity/alkalinity. Skin sits slightly acidic (~4.5–5.5); true soap is mildly alkaline (~9–10). Your skin's acid mantle rebounds within an hour of washing, so a well-cured bar is gentle despite the higher pH.

S

Saponification

The chemical reaction between fats/oils and lye (sodium hydroxide for bar soap, potassium hydroxide for liquid soap) that produces soap and glycerin. This is the ancient process at the heart of all true soap-making — and when it's complete, no lye remains in the finished bar.

Sea Kelp

A mineral- and antioxidant-rich seaweed that nourishes and conditions while supporting skin balance. Adds a gentle, ocean-derived boost to everyday bars.

Shea Butter

karite butter

A rich plant butter from the African shea tree, loaded with fatty acids and vitamins. Added at trace as a superfat, it brings deep moisture and a soft, conditioned finish — a favorite for dry and mature skin.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

SLS
SLES
sulfates

A common synthetic detergent surfactant (SLS) used in many 'cleansing bars' and washes. It foams aggressively but can over-strip natural oils and irritate sensitive skin. You won't find it in our bars.

Superfatting

Adding extra oils/fats beyond what the lye can saponify. This leaves a small percentage of unsaponified, conditioning oils in the final bar, making it more moisturizing. Typical superfat: 5–8%.

Syndet

detergent bar
syndet bar

Short for synthetic detergent — a lab-made surfactant bar engineered to mimic soap. Often pH-adjusted but can strip natural oils and exclude glycerin. By FDA rules these usually can't be labeled 'soap,' so they're sold as 'beauty' or 'cleansing' bars.

T

Tallow

beef tallow

Rendered beef fat that produces an exceptionally hard, creamy, long-lasting bar with a gentle, lotion-like lather. A traditional soap fat whose fatty-acid profile is remarkably close to skin's own.

Tea Tree Oil

Melaleuca alternifolia

An essential oil with clarifying, blemish-fighting properties, popular in bars for acne-prone skin. Potent, so it's always dosed within safe IFRA limits.
